The Institute consists of members registered in five entry grades, three honorary grades and a grade for retired members.
Entry Grades
- Student Member
- Student Member shall have a minimum of a Grade Ten (Standard 8) certificate and be either employed as a trainee / learner / junior draughtsperson or is attending a college of draughting, recognised by the Institute, at the time of his/her application for membership. During the period of training, a Student should endeavour to attend a college of technical education to attain the educational qualifications required to become a Member.
- On attaining the necessary educational qualifications and draughting experience, a Student shall apply to be reassessed for upgrading and promotion to a higher grade of membership.
- A Student shall be entitled to remain in such a grade of membership for a maximum period of five (5) years.
- Affiliate Member
- An Affiliate Member shall have a minimum of a Grade Ten (Standard 8) certificate and be employed as a draughtsperson, draughting assistant, computer aided draughting (CAD) operator, or similar, producing drawings from information supplied by a qualified draughting technician or engineer for a minimum period of five (5) years at the time of his/her application for membership.
- On attaining the necessary educational qualification and experience, the Affiliate Member shall apply to be re-assessed for upgrading and promotion to a higher grade of membership.
- Graduate Member
- A Graduate Member shall have a National Diploma, as issued by the Department of Higher Education, or equivalent acceptable to the Institute, and be employed as a draughtsperson in a professional capacity but, does not have the experience required to qualify to be a Member at the time of his/her application for membership.
- On attaining the necessary experience, a Graduate Member shall apply to be reassessed for upgrading and promotion to full Member.
- A Graduate Member shall be entitled to remain in such a grade of membership for a maximum period of five (5) years.
- Associate Member
- An Associate Member shall have a minimum of a Grade Twelve (Standard 10) or N3 certificate and be employed as a draughtsperson or is directly associated with draughting in a professional capacity. In addition to the educational qualifications, an Associate Member shall be not less than twenty one (21) years of age and have a minimum of ten (10) years draughting experience at the time of his/her application for membership.
- An Associate Member shall be encouraged to obtain the requirements for and to register with one of the Statutory Councils of South Africa, or similar.
- Member
- Member shall have a National Diploma, as issued by the Department of Higher Education, or an equivalent acceptable to the Institute, or be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), or other Statutory Councils of South Africa.
- A member shall be employed as a draughtsperson / draughting technician / technologist or, is directly associated with draughting in a professional capacity. In addition to the educational qualifications, a Member shall be not less than twenty one (21) years of age and have a minimum of five (5) years experience as a draughting technician at the time of his/her application for membership.
- Applicants who have a minimum of ten (10) years draughting experience at technician level and have a minimum of a N3 qualification, will also be considered for this grade of membership.
- A Member who has not yet applied to be registered as a professional technician / technologist / draughtsperson with one of the Statutory Councils of South Africa, or other such body, is required to do so.

Retired Member Grade
- A Retired Member shall be a person who was a former Member, Associate Member or Life Member of the Institute, is 55 years of age or older and has retired from active employment.
- A Retired Member shall not be entitled to vote or to hold office in the Institute.
- A Retired Member may apply, in writing, to be reinstated as a Member, Associate Member or Life Member should he / she again wish to be entitled to vote or to hold office in the Institute.
